The breed

Caucasian Shepherd

An ancient guardian from the Caucasus mountains – brave, independent and endlessly devoted to its family.

Origin

The powerful head and dense coat are hallmarks of the breed.

The Caucasian Shepherd is one of the oldest herding breeds. For centuries it has guarded the flocks and homes of people in the Caucasus mountains – today's Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the North Caucasus – against wolves, bears and strangers.

The harsh climate and hard work created a dog that is tough, undemanding and able to make its own decisions. The International Canine Federation (FCI) recognises the breed under standard No. 328, with Russia as the country of the standard.

Temperament

The Caucasian Shepherd is balanced, self-confident and fearless. With its family it is calm and affectionate, while towards strangers it is suspicious and alert. It is a natural guardian that protects its home without special training.

That is why the breed needs a responsible owner: early socialisation, consistent training and plenty of attention from the very first months.

Care and keeping

The Caucasian Shepherd feels best in a house with a large, well-fenced yard. It copes very well with cold, but in summer it needs shade and plenty of fresh water. The dense coat should be brushed once or twice a week, and every day while shedding.

  • quality food suitable for giant breeds;
  • moderate but regular exercise – walks and freedom in the yard;
  • vaccinations, deworming and regular vet check-ups;
  • early socialisation with people, sounds and other animals.
